For women the idea is to be complacent and let a man rule, and make choice and decision for her; the modern problem for this today relates to women having the right to their own bodies and having control over their own decision (Malacrida & Boulton, 2014). Dealing with women’s aggression, it isn’t as dealt with women; in the book Odd Girl Out, it is stated “Girls use backbiting, exclusion, rumors, name-calling, and manipulation to inflict psychological pain on targeted victims” (Simmons, 2002, p. 3). This shows that women play a quiet role even in things such as being aggressive. Women were and are expected to keep quiet, and it is no ingrained into society that women who do speak out and are loud are considered “a bitch” or just plain loud and annoying.
Other groups that one should look at, are those who don’t identify with that of their assigned gender. These people include transgender, agender, bigender, gender nonconforming, and many others. According to Del Vale, gender in a way is a social construct to keep people stuck into a role to fulfill societies need (1993, p. 19-20). These ideas are what promote behaviors and cultural norms and thus the idea of “gender”. Female passivity and male dominance are causing harm to many people and especially students; these ideas are promoting a culture in which men take advantage of women and do harm to them both physically and mentally (Benagiano, Carrara, & Filippi, 2012). Other genders lack recognition and validity and because of that they aren’t getting treated as they should be. Ways to stop this huge concern is first of all education. Until many see this as a problem, they will not act. One group that specifically needs to be educated are men. According to Gender, Place & Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography, “Welch men discussed hooking up as a ‘man 's game,’ embodied by the ruthless, self-interested girl chasing of the fraternity men – part real…” (Sweeny, 2014). By this he means that many men are in some way hunting women and often this can be unintentional due to society’s standards or a personal choice.
