Can you imagine living in a country where you need to disguise yourself as a boy just to be able to play the sport you love? Or even a world where you are allowed to participate in competitions but when you win the tournament then you receive less prize money than the males even though you trained just as hard? Women from different cultures also prefer different body types for example whites prefer thinner and leaner bodies and blacks prefer bigger bodies. Women are fearful that if they participate in sport it will make them muscular and that they will “look like a man” (Jacobsen, 2014). How can women overcome these barriers?
Sport and physical activity organizations needs to recognize and respect the cultural, educational, social, and environmental and gender differences of women participating in sport. The guidelines below can help providers to ensure that most activities and sports are accessible to all women:
• Change the sport and physical activity legislation so that women can have privacy in change rooms and facilities. If windows can be peered through then they should be covered (Caillïau, 2013).
• Arrange women only coaching sessions for certain days and have female staff on duty during those sessions for example, having female lifeguards (SportingEquals, 2010).
• Allow women a wide range of clothing choices for example, allow women to wear more than the conventional clothing during swimming (SportingEquals,
