The characters are a study in how privilege affects a relationship. Officer Ryan is not only a white man but also a police officer. Christine is a female African-American civilian. Officer Ryan pulls over a car suspecting it is carjacked car from earlier despite not having anything to go on other than the drivers are also African-American. Officer Ryan orders Christine and her husband out of the car. Ryan molests Christine pretending it is part of a pat down and forces her husband to apologize over nothing. Christine cannot do anything to stop him as she is unarmed and he could arrest her or worse. She is completely helpless. Ryan then lets the couple go with a warning but not without completely humiliating them. Christine is traumatized after the situation. She recognizes that she was completely helpless and couldn’t do anything to stop the situation. Later on in the movie Officer Ryan comes across a severe car crash and discovers Christine at the heart of it. It turns out Christine trapped under the car and in severe danger. She becomes hysterical at the sight of him and refuses his help. However since he is the only one at the scene she is forced to accept his help. It is again another situation where Christine is completely helpless and forced to accept Ryan’s presence. He eventually gets her out of the car in time and both of their lives are saved. Early in the film Anthony says that he only steals from white people never from black people. When he sees the black navigator he assumes the driver is white but is thrown off when the driver turns out to be black. It never occurs to him that a black person could own such an expensive car. Anthony continues with the carjacking anyway and the driver is Cameron, the television director. Cameron fights back and wins control of the car. Police officers arrive at the scene. One of the police officers recognizes Cameron, and vouches for him thus deescalating the scene. Cameron lets Anthony out of the car and tells him he’s embarrassed of him as a fellow African-American.
