There are so many underlying issues that pose to threaten the minds of young men and the minds of young women today. However, the most threatening issue that we face today is Gender Inequality. Gender inequality stems from societal influence to differentiate men and women roles in society.
In some societies women are treated inferior to men and that 's not fair. Man and woman should be held in accordance to the same standard relieving role strains. The word sex is used to identify the biological criteria for identifying a person as male or female. It pins men and women against each other. Gender roles are set in most cultures and there are expected behavior within those roles. In Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy, Piercy makes the claim against the femininity of the barbie doll and the kind of stereotype it creates about women. Piercy writes, “This girlchild was…big nose and fat legs”, (p.403). The first stanza alone of this poem creates a dynamic idea on how women are supposed to look. The idea that having fat legs and a big nose makes you unacceptable to the world. In some countries Muslim girls cover their faces when in public . The display of skin even in the college classroom would be immoral to many Muslims, however in other Muslim countries such covering would be unusual. Gender socialization at the meso level is a process by which people learn to identify these differences as cultural norms. At early birth, parents socialize their babies by attaining specific characteristics to the baby. If the baby is a boy, they are specified to be strong, firm, and associate the color blue to their identity. And if the baby is a girl, they are specified to be soft, delicate and are associated with the color pink (our social world, pg 252).
