Diet Soda: Overrated Sometimes, life is like your favorite restaurant. You may be excited to get that same pasta dish you're used to eating, and other times the special that the waiter convinces you to get is disappointing. Life has its ups and downs, that's all part of the experience. "Live life to the fullest" is easy to say, but following through is one of the most difficult challenges we could face. Fretting over our smallest mistakes causes the degeneration of our precious lives.…
According to the article, “Will Your Marriage Last?” by Brooke Lea Foster, there are many factors that come into play when it comes to having a happy, successful marriage and avoiding divorce. On the other hand, Foster states that there are more factors that may distress a marriage thus leading to divorce rather than maintaining a happy marriage. Some factors that lead to divorce are interracial marrying, moving in prior to marrying, and having a child (Foster 107). I can agree with Foster that it is surprising to find out that moving in with your partner prior to marriage would lead to feeling like they are forced into a life long commitment rather than choosing to be in one. I find this to be extremely surprising considering that living together before marrying would be beneficial in seeing whether the partnership would work out.…
J.A. and R.C.’s family structure falls into what Wright and Leahey (2013) describe as families in the late middle age which is characterized by retirement until death. One task is to “maintain own or couple functioning and interest in the face of physiological decline: exploration of new familial and social role options (Wright & Leahey, 2013, pp. 109).” J.A. and R.C., while both falling under this category, have different factors to think about in terms of their own lifestyle. R.C. is single and with her Marfan syndrome is doing everything she can to maintain her independence but her condition is worsening and limiting her abilities to do some of the things she enjoyed in the past. J.A. has a husband and children and has had to adjust to her children’s spouses and grandchildren in her lifestyle, according to Wright and Leahey (2013).…

Despite the fact that the divorce rate nationwide is at its lowest level recently, baby boomers are divorcing at a rate that is disturbing. For couples over 50 years old, the divorce rate has increased 2 fold over the last 2 decades, according to recent studies. This phenomenon is referred to as “gray divorce.” Couples involved in a gray divorce have just as much to worry about as younger couples and sometimes even more. It is a very big subject but we will focus on a few things that you might not have thought about before.…
Perry’s Schemes of Intellectual and Ethical Development: A Personal Journey Perry’s Schemes of Intellectual and Ethical Development explains that college student’s journey through 9 different positions in regards to intellectual and ethical development. In all honesty when we were assigned Tuesdays with Morrie and heard a little summary of what the book held inside, I quickly made the assumption that it was a “useless project” or a “waste of time”. I began to read the book with a totally uninterested attitude and even though the book may not be my favorite genre, it really grabbed my attention whether I liked to admit it or not. The wisdom and insight Morrie sought to inform people on and the inspiring outlook he had on life stirred in myself a need to meditate and reflect on my own life. Over all it was a motivating book and I gained strong personal insights, in some ways I even felt times of shock with views that made me consider changing my own life now and for the future, and realized…
The American families truly changed over the last 50 years, not since World War II we seem so many women and mothers in the workforce. During World War II nearly 46% of the female population in the United States stepped up to the plate to fill the roles that their male counterparts had up to that point dominated. During the 1960s there was a time of social and political change not only were African-Americans fighting for their rights to be treated as equals, but there was another group pushing for social change the change they were seeking were in women’s issues. During the 60s and 70s a huge array of women’s groups were lobbying for equal rights on par with those of their male counterparts. No longer with a sit on the sidelines and let their…
Being a current high school graduate made me question myself, “What will I do with myself now?” I have lived up to expectations of others so far. When I read Toni Morrison’s speech I realized how I’ve grown to become my own persona. Her speech engaged me as well as encourage and motivate me. Even though in her time it was difficult to become a successful women who went to school she was able to become the first African American who won the Nobel Prize in Literature.…
One person that has influenced my life, career and leadership skills would be my mother, LaDawn Lundstrom. My mother is the leading role in my life and I could never thank her enough for her dedication to my life. My mother has raised my brother and I alone and has always shown unconditional love for the both of us. When my mother was 21 when she had my older brother Dante and was completely unaware of the difficult life changes that the future would hold as a single, young mother. My parents were never married but were in a seemingly serious and devoted relationship, but had their ups and downs but ultimately wanted to stay together to have a family.…
There are many factors that influence the increasing trend of boomerang children in modern families that will most likely affect me in the near future. One of these factors is my family’s culture. Although, since I was young, I have never seen any problem with moving out after getting a reliable job, however, my mom sees otherwise. According to her chinese culture, children are supposed to stay at the parent’s house until marriage is accomplished, which means that she expects me to live with her until I get married. However, considering the fact that I’m not planning on getting marry and the increasing trend of people getting engaged at older ages, if I do get marry, it would most likely be in my mid-30s.…
It is often hard to paint yourself as one color when in fact you feel that you are made up multiple different shades. Trying to figure out what ideology I subscribe to most follows this example, as there are many different ideologies I mix with on a daily basis. For example, I am mainly Puritanical when making up my schedule and following it as if my life depended on going to each event at the exact moment and time that was written down. Another example would be my shopping habits, which basically entail the ideology of consumerism with me constantly on the hunt to own and collect what I consider to be valuable items to the point of near obsession. The list of examples goes on, but hopefully, it is evident that not one ideology on its own can…
Balancing work and family is common struggle among Americans. The target of the debate lies in opposing opinions as to how to prioritize work and family. Should work come before family, or should family come first? Even more, could there be a common ground in equally balancing both? Being passionate about this issue, I began to research it further.…
