George was born in Albemarle County, Virginia on November 19th, 1752. He had 5 brothers and 4 sisters. In fact his youngest brother, William Clark went on to co-lead the Lewis and Clark expedition which was a big deal. Considering the fact that he had five brothers and four sisters he was clearly raised well by his parents and had a good education as showed in the war later in his life.
George became a commander when he came up with a plan to protect the settlers by gaining more land in the Northwest Territory. He asked for Virginia’s support and the Governor Patrick Henry granted him commander of the mission. He and an estimated one hundred, seventy five men marched into Kaskaskia, present day Illinois, and took the fort on July 4th, 1778. Clark then went and conquered a nearby prairie and convinced an Indian tribe to stop fighting for the British. Clark took over other forts, one including Fort Sackville at Vincennes (in present-day Indiana) and did it so intelligently that he tricked the British into thinking that there were many more soldiers on the premises and the commander agreed to all of Clarks terms, that made the Indians think that the British were bad people. …show more content…
