Selling over 185 million copies over the last few decades, is the richest and most famous man of video games. It is not the CEO, rather, it is an Italian plumber clad in a red jump suite, who bears an iconic mustache ---Mario (Ewalt “#15 Mario). Since it has been out, this game has changed the gaming world. Although video games are most commonly a source for pleasure, entertainment, and relaxation, they can also be used a learning tool. The advantage of playing video games can be proven in its ability to enhance learning. Most people usually associate Mario with smashing breaks and saving Princess Peach, but Mario has also been featured in learning games, such a “Mario Teaches Typing”, a computer game that duals as a computer game and a tool …show more content…
GO Fish! Is one of the most popular children’s game ever. The game, classically a card game, improves a child’s concentration and memory by requiring them to remember the placement of the cards, while keeping the rules of the game in their mind (huffpost.com). Go Fish! and other memory games such as Sudoku help to improve your memory and help delay brain decay (Klein, “7 Tricks to Improve your memory). Marcel Danesi said that, “playing them activates synapses in the whole brain, including the memory areas”. Amanda Morin suggests that by playing memory games such as Go Fish!, Crazy 8’s, and Uno, you help improve the child’s working memory---which refers to how we manipulate information stored in our short term memory. She also states that working memory is how children learn and they come to follow instructions: just as Go Fish! requires the child to keep the rules in their head and complete a task, following instructions requires them to keep the rules in their head and complete a task as well (“8 Working Memory …show more content…
Masking itself as a game, valuable lessons are able to be taught to the children such as math, improve reading skills, aid with typing, help the child’s hand-eye coordination, and improve their memory. With this information, schools could take advantage of the video games and use them as a learning tool. The video games could be incorporated into the curriculum during a computers period or while in small groups. This method could be very successful since not all children learn the same way---some need more than just instruction. Young children learn extremely well by engaging in hands on activities. However, one of the most important benefits of incorporating the use of video games in a learning environment is that it helps combine fun and learning for the child, making the process more fun and therefore leaving the child with positive feelings toward school and
