GO Fish! Is one of the most popular children’s game ever. The game, classically a card game, improves a child’s concentration and memory by requiring them to remember the placement of the cards, while keeping the rules of the game in their mind (huffpost.com). Go Fish! and other memory games such as Sudoku help to improve your memory and help delay brain decay (Klein, “7 Tricks to Improve your memory). Marcel Danesi said that, “playing them activates synapses in the whole brain, including the memory areas”. Amanda Morin suggests that by playing memory games such as Go Fish!, Crazy 8’s, and Uno, you help improve the child’s working memory---which refers to how we manipulate information stored in our short term memory. Masking itself as a game, valuable lessons are able to be taught to the children such as math, improve reading skills, aid with typing, help the child’s hand-eye coordination, and improve their memory. With this information, schools could take advantage of the video games and use them as a learning tool. The video games could be incorporated into the curriculum during a computers period or while in small groups. This method could be very successful since not all children learn the same way---some need more than just instruction. Young children learn extremely well by engaging in hands on activities.
