Ralph is determined to make something of the island and to have the other boys under control. He has his mind set on building a signal fire to get rescued as well as building huts for shelter. "I'm chief," said Ralph, "because you chose me. And we were going to keep the fire going. Now you run after food--" (150) This shows that Ralph is determined to continue to have a rescue plan so that everyone on the island can get rescued. On the other hand, Jack is only determined about getting a kill and he could care less about getting rescued. He has his mind set on having fun and spending his time on the island in a way that he thinks is best for him. Jack eventually does get a kill which becomes the lord of the flies. “Now listen. We might go later to the Castle Rock. But now I’m going to get more of the biguns away from the conch and all that. We’ll kill a pig and give a feast.” “We’ll go into the forest and hunt now” (133). Jack and his tribe are preparing to go hunting to get a kill. They are very determined that they will get a pig and they did. The head of the sow becomes the lord of the flies because flies start to surround the head. After killing the pig, Jack starts to lose faith in everyone else causing him to gain power while Ralph starts to lose power. As Jack gains power he becomes more violent and he wants to kill Ralph so that he has no competition. Ralph hides from Jack in the forest and Jack burns the forest down. The fire was meant to kill Ralph, instead the smoke signals a naval officers boat and ends up getting them rescued. Ralph and Jack were both determined to have power and because of this the boys who are still alive get
