The Black Riders were after Ring as well. During the adventure, Frodo journeys through many forests and meets many people, some of whom join him on his journey. The Fellowship of the Ring is the first book in the Lord of the Rings series. In this book, Frodo does not reach Mount Doom, but it is likely that he will within the next few books. The theme of this book is greed. The ring brings out the worst qualities in a person, especially a greed for the ring. One previous owner of the Ring of Power was named Sméagol. One of his relatives found the ring, and Sméagol killed him to get it. After this event, Sméagol began making unusual sound in his throat, which caused his family to nickname him Gollum. Gollum became more corrupted after he spent more time with the ring. He was very greedy and insane. When Bilbo had the ring, he refused to give it to anyone, until he passed it on to Frodo. In my opinion, there was too much walking and journeying, rather than action and suspense. The beginning of the book was very slow, without much drama or conflict. The descriptions were very thorough, but there was not much happening. "Suddenly came out of the shadows of the trees, and before them lay a wide space of grass, grey under the night. On three sides the woods pressed upon it; but eastward the ground fell steeply in the tops of the dark trees, growing at the bottom of the slope, were below their feet," (Tolkien, 91). While this imagery is very well written, the balance of suspense and description was uneven. It caused me to be bored and made it hard for me to want to read. But, the story is classic and it is well written. I would give it three out of five
