ATTENTION GRABBING SENTENCE HERE. The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien was written in 1954. It follows Bilbo Baggins' adoptive son, Frodo, on his quest to destroy the Ring of power. After Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday in the Shire, he disappears and goes on an adventure by himself. He ends up staying with the elves. Before he left, Bilbo wrote a will that proclaimed that all of his belongings would by passed onto Frodo, including his ring, which made him invisible. Gandalf the Grey, a wizard and friend of Bilbo and Frodo, informs them of the dark magic lying within the Ring. It is dangerous and can make the wearer into a heartless being. Because of the extent of the power the Ring holds, it can not be destroyed normally. Frodo must …show more content…
The Black Riders were after Ring as well. During the adventure, Frodo journeys through many forests and meets many people, some of whom join him on his journey. The Fellowship of the Ring is the first book in the Lord of the Rings series. In this book, Frodo does not reach Mount Doom, but it is likely that he will within the next few books. The theme of this book is greed. The ring brings out the worst qualities in a person, especially a greed for the ring. One previous owner of the Ring of Power was named Sméagol. One of his relatives found the ring, and Sméagol killed him to get it. After this event, Sméagol began making unusual sound in his throat, which caused his family to nickname him Gollum. Gollum became more corrupted after he spent more time with the ring. He was very greedy and insane. When Bilbo had the ring, he refused to give it to anyone, until he passed it on to Frodo. Then, Frodo felt the need to hide the ring from …show more content…
In my opinion, there was too much walking and journeying, rather than action and suspense. The beginning of the book was very slow, without much drama or conflict. The descriptions were very thorough, but there was not much happening. "Suddenly came out of the shadows of the trees, and before them lay a wide space of grass, grey under the night. On three sides the woods pressed upon it; but eastward the ground fell steeply in the tops of the dark trees, growing at the bottom of the slope, were below their feet," (Tolkien, 91). While this imagery is very well written, the balance of suspense and description was uneven. It caused me to be bored and made it hard for me to want to read. But, the story is classic and it is well written. I would give it three out of five

The figurative language deepens the book, and the style and craft drags the reader farther into it. The central idea of the book is well chose and described. The only thing that could have been improved is the figurative language. There is so much figurative language at certain parts that many readers do not may have trouble understanding it. Even with the confusing parts this book deserves a four out of five stars, because it is intriguing, but still has flaws.…

A new computer, book, dress, phone, or movie, each item has a purpose in life, but also a certain amount of power over the beholder. J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Return of the King, described a specific object in his novels and the supremacy it held over certain characters. The One Ring of Power, The Ring of Sauron, plays an essential role in The Return of the King as a source of power, trial of will, and symbol. From Sauron to Isildur, the river to Gollum, Gollum’s cave to Bilbo’s pocket, Bilbo to Frodo, the Ring of power fought to control the minds and wills of many (Pattern 5). The Ring of Sauron exerts resilient power over various characters, but especially Gollum.…

Gandalf promised Bilbo he would protect Frodo, Sam has devoted his life to be by Frodo’s side, and Gandalf left to gather information for Frodo for his own benefit. Some people say think that Frodo’s decision to leave Gandalf was a good one because the ring would protect him. This idea, however is invalid due to the fact the Ring doesn’t protect it corrupts from what happened to Bilbo when the ring almost made him attack Gandalf. Others think it was right for Frodo to leave without Gandalf because he is taking too long. This idea as well is invalid because Gandalf left to collect information for Frodo , so leaving him would be a foolish decision.…

    1) The first character I chose that in my opinion demonstrates heroic qualities in The Hobbit is Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo starts off as just an ordinary hobbit but as he is on his journey with Gandalf and the Dwarves he truly shows his heroic abilities. Time after time Bilbo pushes his limits and reveals all of the courage he truly has. In chapter two he is faced with his first burglary task which is to steal from the trolls. Although he does not succeed in this task what is truly important is that he had the courage to try.…

Thesis Statement: In the novel The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien shows that man has the ability to decide between good and evil, contrasting Golding who views that all man is innately evil. This difference is portrayed through the characters Ralph and Frodo, Roger and Sauron, and Piggy and Gandalf. I. Golding uses the character Ralph to show that man struggles between choosing good versus evil and chooses evil, compared to Tolkien’s novel where Frodo has to make the choice for good and ultimately chooses good. A. Ralph finds himself having to decide between going back to the beach and joining Jack’s evil dance during the thunderstorm.…

Are you truly content with the life you’re living? In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, an honorable Thane stumbles upon 3 mystical witches who inform him he will become 2nd in line to the throne, and then king thereafter. The thought of becoming king consumes him and in turn, he murders the king in order to guarantee he shall take over in his place. Macbeth’s character is never secure or satisfied with the power he has because of his own avarice. Shakespeare uses crowns and sleep as symbols to convey his theme that greed prohibits satisfaction because a greedy person will always want more.…

In excerpt from The Lord of the Ring: The Fellowship of the Ring, by JRR Tolkein, Sméagol, an innocent creature, and his friend are fishing when Deagol finds a ring in the mud. This ring was created by the dark lord Sauron in an attempt to rule Middle Earth. The ring is the embodiment of evil and upon seeing it Sméagol murders his friend to get it. The discovery of the ring alters how Sméagol acts but a larger, more important transformation occurs. I will discuss this change by answering the question: how does finding the ring transform Smeagol in to Gollum? After finding the ring, Sméagol moves from a higher character type to Gollum, a vicious man.…
