In the poem of Beowulf, the writer uses many literary devices to convey Grendel's mother emotions, voluntary, and involuntary actions by using these literary devices such as: Alliteration, and Assonance. These two literary devices can improve the readers ability to understand the piece of literature they are going to read about in the poem of Beowulf. The writer of Beowulf uses alliteration. "Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of each or most of the words in a sentence. The easiest way to use alliteration would be to repeat the starting letter of the words." (Writers). This adds emphasis and effect onto the poem. "Assonance is also called 'vowel rhyme'. Assonance is the repetition of a pattern of similar …show more content…
We can learn from this brief description of Beowulf that he is such a powerful moving man, nothing can bring him crumbling down, sounds like they were calling him a God of sorts. Beowulf was a perfect contender for Grendel's mother because of how he fit into her criteria for a man which is strong and powerful. The use of Alliteration in Grendel's mother passage is very clear. One example in the poem is "How fierce, could have come with man's strength, fought with the power and courage men fight with, smashing their shining swords, their bloody, Hammer-forged blades onto boar-headed helmets, Slashing and stabbing with the sharpest of points. The soldiers raised their shields and drew Those gleaming swords, swung them above the piled-p benches, leaving their mail shirts and their helmets where they'd lain wen the terror took hold of them" (Raffel) There are many uses of Alliteration in this paragraph first with letters "S" and the letter "F". These letters make the paragraph more understanding to the reader and by using the letter "S" multiple times helps the reader remember what they are …show more content…
She fell, Grendel's fierce mother, and Geats' proud prince was ready to leap on her. But she rose at once and repaid him with her clutching claws, wildly tearing at him. He was weary, that best and strongest of soldiers; his feet stumbled, and, in an instant, she had him down, held helpless." (Raffel) By assigning this quote into the essay it shows how Grendel's mother reverses the dominance of Beowulf on her to she is on Beowulf's body and how she is in control of him. She tends to like it when she is in control of the situation, she claws at Beowulf marking her territory on his ripped chest. Grendel's mother does this because of her want to have a child. A woman by the name of Helen Fisher published an article called Brains Do It: Lust, Attraction, and Attachment. Her article is based on sexual desires, romantic longings, and feelings of long term emotional union. In the article Helen Fisher talks about the three emotion systems that complicate human life, the first one is The Sex Drive, which people crave sexual gratification and is usually associated with hormones. We can see the Sex Drive when Beowulf goes to battle with Grendel's mother and they begin their fight. The second Emotions System is The Attraction System, this emotion talks about an

The story of Beowulf portrays a character that is highly mysterious and a great example of an oxymoron. Grendel’s mother is portrayed as either a great mother or a wicked witch depending on whose eyes the reader views the story through. Many readers may argue that Grendel’s mother is depicted as a caring and nurturing mother. Throughout the story the author portrays a mother that is trying to fight to protect and avenge her son. For example, in line 504 the author strategically includes the phrase, “To avenge her only son.”…

The anglo-saxon in general were boastful, distrusting, and war-lusting people. They were open with personal affairs and quick to accuse. These are their downfalls. It is most likely because of this a dethroned queen, grendel's mother, has become a monster. In Beowulf the author does not directly state she is a queen, but one can tell she is due to the way she is strategic in the sense that she strikes politically and first in battle.…

Grendel’s mother was seeking revenge for the scandalous acts that were taken out on her son. To perform her revenge, Grendel’s mother would kill innocent people and then attempt to kill Beowulf in her lair. With Grendel’s mother threatening Beowulf, it proves that women are not as powerless as they seem. Soon after the underwater fight with Grendel’s mother the narrator explains what would have happened if Beowulf did not come armed by saying, “The son of Ecgtheow would have surely perished and the Geats lost their warrior under the wide earth had the strong links and locks of his war-gear not helped to save him” (1550-1553). This is significant because when fighting Grendel Beowulf did not use anything but his bare hands.…

The prevalence of women in Beowulf is limited, however, their importance is great, perhaps even more so than men. Grendel, the loathsome man-beast feared by all, was thirsty for blood. Grendel’s mother was the only one who cared for this unlovable monster. This is one reason Grendel’s mother appeared in this poem instead of his father. She lived by example, only leaving the safety of the forest to avenge the death of a kinsman (Kiernan).…

Alliteration is used by Nick Bland (2011) in his story (“In the Jingle Jangle Jungle on a cold and rainy day, four little friends found a perfect place to play.”). Alliteration like rhyme and rhythm help young readers become proficient. An early skill of emergent readers is being able to hear and distinguish the sounds (phonemes) that make up the beginning of words. Children are attune to words with the same initial sound and will be drawn into the story because of this this (High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, 2005). It also makes it fun to read – it is much better than writing ‘In the jungle four little animals found a place to…

The repeating consonants in a series of words adds a certain flair to the poem that would be less effective without it. The phrase “rusty rockeries” (7) further shows the child’s negativity about the junkyard. Combining those two words shows how different the child and the father feel about the junkyard. Another instance of alliteration occurs in the third stanza when the speaker says “cannons or cars” (17) to describe the products of the steel mill.…

Mary Dockray-Miller describes Grendel’s mother when she states: “The violent queen illustrates the performance nature of the gender of power and shows that action, rather than biological sex, it is the determinant of that gender” (Dockray-Miller 1). Grendel’s mother is different because she is a woman, not only is. Men did not respect the women that were similar to Grendel’s mother. Beowulf represents his dislike for Grendel’s mother when he fights and it is the only way to defeat…

The writer enhances the mood and emotions of this song through poetic devices integrated in the song. The poetic devices in the song are repetition, consonance, assonance, alliteration, imagery, rhyme, personification, simile, paradox, metaphor, and hyperbole. Repetition is used in this song when the author includes the phrase “the sounds of silence” at the ends of almost all of the stanzas. Another, poetic device that is used in “The Sound of Silence” is consonance, which takes place when the lyrics “But my words like silent raindrops fell” come up. This line consist of two examples of this poetic device, one where the “d” is repeated in words and raindrops.…
