Immunization of pregnant women and infants protects children from six vaccine preventable diseases, tetanus, tuberculosis and measles. These are major preventable that helps in preventing the child mortality, disability, morbidity and related malnutrition. Immunization of pregnant women against tetanus also reduces the risk of maternal and neonatal mortality. Health Check-Up: this component covers chidren who are aged less than six years of age, including the mothers during antenatal period and lacatng mothers or nursing mothers. The different health services provided by Anganwadi workers for those children and Primary Health Centre (PHC) staff includes regular health check-ups, recording of weight, immunization, management of malnutrition, treatment of diarrhea, and distribution of simple medicines etc.
Referral Services: it is referred to those children who are malnourished and immediate medical attention should be given to them through referral service at the nearest PHC or sub centre. This is because the services are part of the ICDS and these services are covered under the AWC.. Anganwadi Centre (AWC) –is set up in a village premises for delivering the services in the village. These AWCs have been set up in every village of the country. In its functioning, the commitment to the cause of India’s children, present government has decided to set up an AWC in every human occupation / settlement. As a result, total number of AWC would go up to almost 1.4 million. The AWC keeps the children engaged in playful activity for three hours and which also acts as a source of knowledge for them. Different pedagogy methods are adopted to train the children and break the monotony of the simple classroom learning. The different way of engaging the children also motivated the community people even the parents to send their children to the AWC. The componenet of Pre-school education (PSE), is basically covers the children who are needy and are not able to access the educational facility in the nearest government schools. Hence to educate the children of the AWC also educated the children and develop them focusing on six years of age.
