I will agree that while most mentally ill patients do not need a gun. However, people that are on Social Security who have turned over their finances to family could be perfectly able to handle a gun responsibly. However, as stated by the white house, “The reporting that SSA, in consultation with the Department of Justice, is expected to require will cover appropriate records of the approximately 75,000 people each year who have a documented mental health issue, receive disability benefits, and are unable to manage those benefits because of their mental impairment, or who have been found by a state or federal court to be legally incompetent.”(White house) This would prohibit the elderly from having guns. I know I would not want my elderly mother to sit at home alone without protection. What if an intruder forced his way into her home, she could be in danger and if she was allowed to have a gun she could protect herself. As stated on Fox news insider, “An elderly couple turned the tables on a career criminal who tried to rob them at their Albuquerque home, holding him at gunpoint until police arrived. When Lujan didn't listen to their demands to stop, they retrieved their weapons and drew them on him while neighbors called the police” (Fox News insider).
