The Ghost of the previous Danish king in Hamlet is a potent element that causes Prince Hamlet variety of reactions toward the world around him and the unexpected killer, King Claudius. The ghost in the beginning of the play sets an eerie tone while emitting and foreshadowing a theme of death. Often in literature, the presence of a ghost indicates something left unresolved. Scholars argue that the ghost in Hamlet is only a figment of Hamlet’s imagination, or is it real? By putting a play on; the murder of Gonzalez which he made sure that had the same death scenario of King Hamlet. Through the play, Hamlet learns that the ghost was telling him the truth and that he had to avenge his father’s death. On a quest for vengeance young Hamlet starts to become mad and mentally confused. However, the ghost at the same time is a character that can control Hamlet’s anger towards his mother. In the beginning of the play young Hamlet was mad at how fast his mother had married his uncle. In Act 3 the audience sees Hamlet who is being violent with his mother in her bedroom. How the character talks about not being mad and how incestuous and adulterous of a woman Gertrude is for marrying her husband’s brother who was responsible for her husband’s death. Out of nowhere, the ghost appears in the room. When Hamlet sees the ghost his tone and body language changes and the ghost tells Hamlet to not hurt his mother for she is frightened. Gertrude while on the bed sees her son in a weird position and is wondering what’s going on and young Hamlet says he is talking to his father. Gertrude not seeing the ghost thinks Hamlet has gone mad and thinks that his father’s death must have mentally hurt him.
