One of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird’s standout features is its well-crafted characters, which help make the book moving because add depth to the story and help the reader connect to the story. One scene that the reader may think is very suspenseful is when the jury lets out during Tom Robinson’s case. This scene builds a lot of suspense for the reader because the jury usually only is out for a few minutes, so in this extended period of time, the reader will wonder what the jury being out for so long means. They might wonder if it means that Atticus had an argument that could keep the jury out, but Tom doesn’t have a good chance of getting his freedom, or if the jury is genuinely considering acquitting Tom. Another scene in the novel that may strike the reader as suspenseful is the scene where Scout and Jem are walking home from the pageant, when Jem tells Scout to stay still and be quiet. Scout thinks that it’s probably just Cecil trying to scare them again, so she yells out to the person. When she does this though, the person starts sprinting after them. Jem and Scout start running, but Scout falls and the attacker jumps on her, crushing and slicing into her costume. After crushing Scouts costume, the attacker is jerked off Scout into the darkness, and a mysterious man drags an unconscious Jem back to the house.
