Writing Assignment: Option 1
In recent years following the 9/11 attacks, there have been shocking increases in the number of hate crimes directed at victims perceived as “perpetual foreigners.” Similarly, the current political climate and the reign of Trump have made these hate crimes targeted at immigration communities spike higher and higher each year. According to the South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) advocacy group, they have investigated an appalling 207 incidents of hate violence and xenophobia targeting Indians, Muslims, Sikh, Hindu and other minority groups coinciding with the president’s election year; a 34% increase compared to the 157 incidents

They also believed that the brutality of the attack exhibited tremendous dehumanization towards the victims group. They alleged that the crime was “premeditated, intended to kill more than one person in a single event, and created a grave risk of death to others” (U.S Department of Justice, 2017). This is true, bearing in mind that Puriton left the bar after harassing the two men and then returned shortly after shooting directly at them, with the intention of killing. He revealed that he was targeting those individuals only and no one else in the restaurant for a certain reason. The offender also opened fire with no regard to the innocent people around injuring Ian Grillot, an innocent bystander. If the two men were not there that day or were not “of color,” the incident would likely have not have occurred. Some say, including neighbors and friends of the offender that Purinton was drunk and his behavior was a result of him recently losing his father in 2015. They say that his behavior is as of late and his drinking has just recently become an issue, however, the death of his father and his erratic behavior could not become an exception to his actions.
Although an indictment is merely an accusation, as of April 12, 2018, Purinton filed a change of plea in federal court and may plead guilty to the two federal hate crime charges with a potential death sentence. His sentencing date is set for May 4th of 2018 and he will likely spend his life in

A hysterical white girl said that a nineteen-year-old colored boy tried to assault her in an elevator of a public office building in broad daylight. Without even hesitating to find out whether or not the story was true, a mob of Americans, white and black, went on a rampage that took the lives of around 50 white men and between 150 and 200 colored men, women and children. Along with all the chaos, mobs started fires, looted homes, and damaged the reputation of the city of Tulsa and the state of Oklahoma. These acts are called race riots. This paper studies four articles and a manuscript on the use of racial profiling in the United States. The articles show a good variety by showing the tactics used in racial profiling and the efforts being made to stop this heinous act. Lawrence (2015) suggests that racial profiling is already successfully in-use by U.S Customs Agents, who look at facial expressions and signs of nervousness to spot suspicious activity at U.S boarders. Other written works, such as Selk (2015), combat the theory of racial profiling being used effectively by demonstrating the aftermath it can have if used made upon an unreliable assumption. America is a melting pot made up of many diverse cultures and beliefs, which makes for a wide variety of outlooks on any…

Racial profiling is highly disliked by many people, especially in the United States. Fauchon (2004) defines racial profiling as stopping and searching people passing through public areas solely because of their color, race, or ethnicity (p. 1). Racial profiling is looked down upon in the United States, however, many people, specifically law enforcement, do so to this day. It’s demeaning to people and it goes against what the country stands for. According to Fauchon (2004), by singling out a group of people by their race, we violate their equal protection.…

    I. Racial Profiling and Racially Biased Policing Racial Profiling has known to spread quick during this early century, although it was bad before people say that it has only got worse. However, that’s just the opinion of some and no one really knows the correct information. The best way racial profiling can be described is provided in Criminal Justice, A Brief Introduction “Discriminatory policing, said the writers, “occurs when police officers and departments unfairly enforce the law-or fail to enforce the law-based on characteristics such as race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, religion, or [sexual preference].”…

In the U.S., racism stands out as a sophisticated dilemma that has affected the country for many centuries. Racial profiling can be termed as the act of targeting or suspecting people considering observed group characteristics instead of taking an individual perspective. This practice is common in the U.S., especially in the police force. Minority groups have for a long time been profiled by police officers regarding crime and other violent behaviors. The African American community is highly linked with these facets.…

During the 1900s, many African American people emerged in the public eye such as Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X, who continued to fight for the equality of black people. In 2008, when Senator Barack Obama was the first black male to be elected to be the president of the United States, some people credit this time in history as the day racism died. They believe if Americans can elect a black person to run our country, racism against black people must be something of the past (Brunners, 2015). Almost immediately after becoming the president-elect, he started receiving threats and hate mail, purely because of the color of his skin (Neiwert, 2016).…

A hate crime is an offense, usually violent, motivated by the prejudice of one specific status a single individual holds, i.e., sexual orientation, religion, gender, ethnicity, ect. These crimes are driven simply because of the hatred one person feels towards another. An individual is targeted because of something about themselves a single person or group of people do not approve of. Hate crimes are the highest priority of the FBI’s Civil Rights program and each year an estimated 1,200 crimes are reported, however, the number is most likely higher due to underreported cases. In 2012, an astonishing 5,796 were committed.…

    The Concept Of Hate Crime

The concept of hate crime is quite complex to define as it is determined by cultural differences, social norms and political interests (Boeckmann and Turpin-Petrosino 2002). Due to the complexity in defining this concept, this study will adopt Perry’s definition which stipulates that ‘hate crime… involves acts of violence and intimidation, usually directed towards already stigmatised and marginalised groups. As such, it is a mechanism of power and oppression, intended to reaffirm the precarious hierarchies that characterise a given social order. It attempts to re-create simultaneously the threatened (real or imagined) hegemony of the perpetrator’s group and the perpetrator’s group and the ‘appropriate’ subordinate identity of the victim’s group. It is a means of marking both the Self and the Other in such a way as to re-establish their ‘proper’ relative positions, as given and reproduced by broader ideologies and patterns of social and political inequality (Perry cited in Chakraborti and Garland 2009 p.5).…
