Folklore is a collection of stories passed down from generation to generation that include Legends, Myths, and Fairy Tales. Legends are based on historical facts. Myths are based on religion and the supernatural. Fairy Tales are fantasy and include majestic elements. Hawaiian folklore is mostly based on the welcoming tradition of the luau dance and enjoying the island’s natural resources. The values that Hawaiians have is they want more priority to peace money and happiness.

The hero’s journey describes the typical adventure of the archetype known as the hero, the person who goes out and achieves great deeds on behalf of the group, tribe, or civilization. The journey is significant because it shows the growth of the hero throughout the story. The archetypal hero's journey fits in folklore because it shows the reader all of the trials the hero had to go through and how difficult it was to win. In “Punia and the King of Sharks”, Punia is the hero of the story who follows several stages of the archetypal hero’s journey. Punia begins in stage one, “The Ordinary World”. He then progresses to “The Call To Adventure” when he needs to find food to feed his village. Next, Punia moves to the stage of “Meeting the Mentor” when his dad teaches him how to catch crabs. “Tests, Allies, and Enemies” are the next stage where Punia fights off sharks while hunting for food. He became a hero during “the Reward” stage. In “The Road Back”, he travels home to deliver his catch of crabs which is the “Return with the Elixir” stage. The journey is significant in “Punia and the King of Sharks” because in order to ensure the survival of his people, the hero has to face danger in order to have food.
