The Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument management guide has acquired an extensive list regarding some of the possible threats that may pose a potential risk to the park’s conservation efforts. These risks are all or partly the direct result of human interactions with the park, they are as follows: threats to migratory birds, population decline in Hawaiian monk seals or green turtles, effects on various species, fish, marine invertebrates and spinner dolphins, coral damage, release of harmful pollutants, marine debris and the introduction of invasive species, recreational water/beach activities (Papahānaumokuākea Management Plan Environmental Assessment, 2008). Their populations have declined steeply worldwide due to human pressure; among them coastal development, light pollution and commercial fishing. Today, six of the seven of the world’s sea turtles are endangered and Red Listed by the IUCN. Nicaragua is home to four of them; the olive ridley, the leatherback, the green and the critically endangered Hawskbill sea turtle. Edward Hoagland is an animal lover at heart saying that he has owned “dogs, cats, turtles, snakes, alligators, pigeons, possums, goats” while he was in his home state of Connecticut (Stuttering Foundation). He writes of animals and their conservations often. In fact, it’s his signature as an author. He has many works, 60 years’ worth, of conservation of animals fueled by this relentless desire to write for animals who cannot write for themselves (Stuttering Foundation). Turtles may seem like they don’t need much because they tend to eat and lounge all day, but this is not the case.…

The act is mainly administered by two federal agencies, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA works with marine species, and the FWS works with freshwater fish and all other species. If a species occurs in both habitats, such as sea turtles, they are jointly managed by both agencies. The act’s central goal is to prevent extinction of species and recover and maintain those populations by removing or lowing threats to their survival, as well as protecting critical habitat. It is often a long and slow process where the species is petitioned and listed by the two agencies or an individual or organization ask the agency the list a species.…

Seven different species of these aquatic reptiles graze our ocean waters, from the shallow seagrass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the vibrant reefs of the Coral Triangle, and even the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. Human activities have tipped the scales in opposition to the survival of these ancient mariners, which are advantageous indicators of ecosystem health and wellness. Nearly all species of sea turtle are identified as endangered. Mutilated for their eggs, meat, skin and shells, sea turtles suffer from poaching and over-exploitation.…
