1. Concussions are the major focus of head injuries and can cause serious damage short and long term but how often do they actually happen? A. According to brainline.org an estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million sports related concussions occur per year in the US. B. From 2001 to 2005 youth athletes compiled about 2.4 million sports related emergency visits annually, 6% or 135,000 of those were concussions. C. Football makes up about 60% of all concussions per year. 1. The majority of high school head injuries for boys comes from football 2. While the majority for girls come from soccer. D. The British Journal of sports medicine stated that increased facial protection can also lessen the force of impacts and lessen risk of injury particularly in hockey but other sports as well. C. In football they have put rules in place to protect players 1. In the NFL you face suspension and fines for illegal hits to the head on a player. 2. The NFL concussion protocol is used to protects players who potentially have suffered a concussion by pulling them from the game and taking them to the locker room for a quick check to see if they show signs of trauma then further action is taken 3. In college football you are ejected for targeting a players head region D. In soccer new rules have made it to where players under a certain age must not head the ball. E. In hockey you must wait till you are a certain age to begin hitting. F. These are all good improvements that have been made to all sports at all levels but concussions are still a major problem so with new technology and research scientist should be able to develop a better defense for players to stop these injuries.
