Health informatics specialists are in demand according to the Department of Labor (Hoyt, 2014). These specialists work within the field of health informatics which is “an information science that is concerned with the management of healthcare data and information using a variety of technologies” (Hoyt, 2014, p.v). The purpose of this paper is to define what health informatics is, to list what careers and competencies are needed for this study, and outline how all the different careers within the study work together to achieve the common goal of an effective and efficient system.
Health Informatics
Health informatics (HI), also known as “clinical informatics” (Hoyt, 2014, p.4), includes information and data on a patient’s health …show more content…
As an example from personal observation, an employee that deals with solely technical issues and needs to procure information benefits from a healthcare worker who is knowledgeable about the data. For example, a New York study showed that “98,000 deaths” were due to medical errors (Corrigan, Donaldson, Kohn, 2014.) So in this case, employees pulling raw data and numbers would benefit from the clinical expertise of an employee well-versed in pharmacological medicine names (possibly a pharmacy technician or pharmacist) and medical terminologies (possibly a nurse or physician) to ensure the desired data is pulled. In a systems framework, each department needs to work together in order to accomplish the common goal, whether it is providing an accurate report of patient data or healthcare statistics.
Conclusion
The purpose of this paper is to outline what health informatics is, what careers and competencies are needed for this study, and how all the different careers within the study work together to achieve the common goal of an effective and efficient system. IT jobs are in high demand and are said to have “tripled from 2009 – 2012” (Hoyt, 2014, p. 26). It takes multiple types of informaticists working together for a department to run effectively and promotes patient
