It tells us the factors that affect hearing loss with age, such as noise exposure and chronic diseases. It tells us how presbycusis increases with age, and how about half of adults aged 75 and older suffer from hearing loss. It tells us how untreated presbycusis is associated with reduced quality of life and diminished physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning. It explains how even though hearing aids have advanced tremendously only 20% of people 65 and up use them. This is because of the stigma, financial concerns, technical aspects of hearing aid use, and lack of knowledge and misconceptions.
