Hegemonic Masculinity In The Workplace Essay

Terms such as hegemonic masculinity and gender roles have been affecting society for quite some time. Hegemonic masculinity is defined as “the condition in which men are dominant and privileged, and this dominance and privilege is invisible.” Gender roles are defined as “sets of behavioral norms assumed to accompany one’s status as a male or female.” There was a time when women were looked to as just a house wife or in some cultures had to be married by a certain age or they were seen as failures. An Indian woman found emails addressed to her father, the emails were about finding a husband for her because she had reached the age of 30 and had not been married yet. The woman called it the “unmarriageable threshold for an Indian woman, 30.” In our culture it is considered normal for a woman or man to grow up, get married and start a family of his or her own. That is not always the path that the individual wants and some people can be very judgement about that. It seems that gender roles affect almost everyone; because people are used to the culture that was already developed there are stereotypes. The women have children and then must take care of them while the men go to work. These types of stereotypes are changing but that is a basic gender role. An issue where hegemonic masculinity is in affect is in the work place where men tend to receive a higher salary than women; they may work the same job and put in the same effort and men make more money.
