Todd left the house to walk to work, without noticing a note on his door that informed him not to go out today. When Todd was walking to work, he got caught up in the Hindu holiday, Holi. Holi is the “festival of colours” (Holi, 2017) during the changing of the seasons, from winter to spring. Holi is celebrated by throwing coloured powders on your friends, family, foes, and people you do not know. Overall, he ended up talking to locals, but at first he was blocking himself from communicating with them. He did not want to eat the local food provided by the people who hosted him and had a lot of trouble communicating with them. Over time he discovered the world behind the wall around his house and realized how the majority of people in India were really living. He left his judgement behind, tried to get to know the locals and even got invited to eat at a man’s house. That showed his progress.
Another key would have been to establish trust. This has been done well by Todd with his team, but only after a period of time. When he finally trusted the two assistant managers, productivity finally started to increase. Therefore, trusting the locals to come up with alternatives, that will likely increase motivation or productivity in their own culture is better than using purely American ways.
