Giving homeless people housing and supportive services is cheaper than one might think. The study by the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness found that it would cost taxpayers just $10,051 per homeless person to give them a permanent place to live and services like job training as well as health care (“Leaving”). This is a dramatically reduced number—68 percent less than the public currently spends—as opposed to the previous amount it would take to have hundreds of people stay homeless. If Central Florida took the permanent supportive housing approach, it could save $350 million over the next decade. This is a staggering amount of money saved just by putting these people into homes and programs that can help them.
