When Ishmael and Junior were running from the war, they were searching for safety. Ishmael’s brother mentally encouraged him by reminding them of their past, and believing that they would find safety and refuge from the war. When Ishmael and Junior were running from rebel forces they knew that there was no going back. Ishmael realized, “We had no idea where we would go or even how to get to a safe place, but we were determined to find one”(36). The boys stayed together for as long as they could. They created an emotional stability for each other and kept each other going, even though death was just around the corner. They remained very faithful to one another, to keep one another safe. Ishmael’s concept of hope and faith came from believing in himself and his brother, they leaned on each other. They created a bond that was practically unbreakable and gave each other strength. Ishmael would have never survived the first part of the war if he did not have his brother; Junior was Ishmael’s forward push to keep going. Ishmael’s concept of hope changed dramatically in his memoir about the war. His hope came from his family, his brother Junior, his father, and his uncle. Ishmael hoped to live and find safety from the war, then for a better day, and lastly for a family. When Ishmael was looking for a new family he hoped for others to believe in him. His conception of hope changed from believing in himself to trusting in others. Regaining his childhood changed his entire conception of hope; he had to want to be accepted and to be wanted. He no longer hoped that he wouldn’t be shot like he had during the war. During his entire experience hope was his emotional and spiritual drive. Having hope helped him immensely in his struggle to survive. When people have faith and hope in themselves they will survive any terrible situation. Hope is key to survival it is easier to look forward to something, rather than holding on to nothing. When in a terrible situation, not giving up is the only thing people have control
