Hospice This summer I got my first job at Hospice. Hospice has been a great experience for me and has really gave me a feel for the medical field. I am currently working at hospice and will continue throughout senior year. When I first started to work at hospice I had to do many duties and I became more responsible. I was assigned different patients and I got more as I became more aware of how things worked. I ended up with twelve patients and I had to visit and spend time with each and every patient everyday. Sometimes I had to spend the night at some of my patients houses to make sure they are doing well and to do little things they need help with as in cooking, cleaning, and guiding them to do different things. I met many different people with different needs and helping them with each of their struggles has impacted my life in a positive way. I have got great advice from the elderly and have made connections with everyone in a emotional way. All the people I have worked with have changed my life in a good way. Some people do not let their sickness affect their daily lives and that is truly amazing. Our main duty as a company is that we strive for good grief. We want families and patients to know we are with them through it all and we do the best to make sure the families are satisfied with our service. We care for our patients in an emotional, physical, and financial cost. Families are very thankful for our services and we try to help them to make memorable times for each and every patient. Physically, we help our patients walk or work on activities to keep them occupied. Puzzles are a great way to help the brain and improve movement. I also took clay and put beads in the clay and the patient would have to take each bead out and that helped with movement and gain strength. I would bring coloring books or play music for some of my patients to help bring back memories from when they were

Several years ago, when I was a brand new nurse’s aide, I had an experience with a dying patient that changed my perspective completely. I was scheduled to be a 1:1 companion with her for a 12 hour shift. The lady had received the news the day before that she most likely not live more than another week or two. And she was very much at peace with this, when talking to throughout my shift I inquired how she could be so calm and collected. She told me that death was just the next step.…

At first glance one would see a middle-aged male, who did not take care of himself. Behind this scene is a hilarious person who likes apples, butter, and cinnamon and who was constantly making me laugh. He was born and raised in Moultrie and that is his current home. He eventually moved to Florida and worked at a hotel and worked at bike week. He never had a motorcycle, but his brother did and they always did bike week together.…

I think that an unusual circumstance allowed me to see just how difficult hospice work can be at times. Leah, one of the nurses I shadowed, had previously worked at an insurance company years before becoming a nurse. Early in my visit, we were informed that one of her old co-workers would be admitted. She spoke to the manager to make sure there was…

What strikes you as most important to remember as someone working in palliative care? • I believe one of the most important aspects to remember when working in palliative care is to be flexible. Patients can often change their mind as treatment progresses, leaving them fearful, irritable and angry at their illness. By being flexible, caregivers can adjust their care procedures to suit the changing needs of their patients while maximizing their satisfaction with their care. 29.…

As a child turning into an adult, you don’t always know what you really want to do in life, so you explore and, in a way, undergo trial and error in the pursuit of happiness. I personally did not know what I wanted to do when starting college, but I looked at my qualities to see where I could apply it best. This lead me to becoming a registered nurse or RN because I had already had some experience as a CNA, just wanted to further my education. To become a RN, usually college at an associates level is required at least and consists of mainly things such as reporting, observing, analyzing, supervising, prescribing, and educating. A RN can work at many places, such as hospitals, educational services, ambulatory services, nursing homes, traveling…

I was employed at a local nursing home at the early age of 18 and I became very attached to my residents as well as learned how to aide a variety of different people. I learned how to take care of residents that had physical complications as well as mental behavioral issues. I worked in a nursing home called Salt River Nursing Home which housed about 80 residents at a time. I worked in an area called the Special Needs Unit in which held about twenty patients that suffered from dementia or Alzheimer's. The residents were housed in an area that required twenty four hour watch, they were required to wear bracelets that made sure they didn't leave their area and at any given time I had twenty residents and pulled fourteen hour shifts several days…

Fieldnote Have you ever been in the presence of a verbal brawl on the brink of a physical altercation, and you cannot help but watch with anxious anticipation? Well I have, and it was in the most unexpected of places, a nursing home. A place that I assumed was a quiet and peaceful community of the old and sweet, proved to be very different. Long gone are my stereotypes I once held of the elderly demographic, and in its place are the men and women who have given me a tour inside their complex minds that I am still learning to understand. I work as a Resident Companion at a nursing home, specifically in the Alzheimer and dementia unit.…

They are not only there to provide for them when they are sick, but support them throughout their journey. Not everyone is able to become of nurse, because of all it takes to become one. Those who are, change people’s lives in such a positive way, that no one will ever understand unless it is experienced.…

My first clinical experience was at St. Vincent hospital on a geriatric unit, when I was a second year nursing student. The nurse led me to the patient 's room right away.…

My only non-embarrassing memory from middle school was set, of all places, in my eighth grade Health class. Presumably for the sexual wellness unit, we were watching a video about pregnancy. Beginning from conception, the film depicted detailed photos and videos of fetal development. While many were freaked out by the “alien babies” on the screen, I was enthralled. I tried not to sniffle as I cried from the beauty of it all and decided that I had found my life’s work.…
