In order to improve his artwork Leonardo turned to science, and in his study of nature and anatomy with realistic paintings he paved the way for more accurate figures.
After hard work of study Leonardo discovered that objects were not comprised of outlines but actually three-dimensional bodies defined by light and shadows. Chiaroscuro was the technique that gave his paintings soft lifelike quality. He also discovered that objects detail and color changed as it receded in the distance. The technique was originally developed by Flemish and Venetian painters.
