Without the United States, the Soviet Union would spearhead the attack on Japan, taking large amounts of land from Asia in the process. The atomic bomb might be dropped by the Soviets instead and in the end they would have large portions of Asia, including all of Korea. The arms race would continue as normal, but with the Soviets ending the war on their own terms, they would be able to secure however much land they deemed fit. The United States would be forced to respond in an attempt to limit communism, but would have no foothold in Asia, save Taiwan if event unfolded similarly. Ultimately, the cold war would be more hostile with the Soviet Union being in a much better position. However, it is very unlikely that a nuclear war would ensue as both sized realized how devastating their weapons
