Jamestown was the first step to America and our freedom, but it wasn't easy. In 1607- 6110 colonist set sail for the new land they were soon to call Jamestown. Some terms that are important are colonists, Jamestown,Chesapeake bay, and the Powhatan Indians. In early Jamestown so many colonists died because of the bad environment, their relationships with indians, and jobs and types of settlers they brought.
One reason so many colonists died is because of the horrible environment. The water in the rivers and creeks were brackish(a mixture of salt and fresh water unsafe to drink). They attempted to dig themselves wells to gain water. This didn't work because they dug them too shallow so they were vulnerable to a drought. Speaking about a drought the colonists in Jamestown came in on a drought when they arrived and it lasted until 1611. This could of been a MAJOR reason so many people died. The environment was a huge factor why a lot of people died in jamestown.
Another major reason a lot of colonist died in Jamestown was because of their interactions with indians. Also in document C they brought over 47 gentlemen which pretty much were people who sat around and watched over the town. If they brought something other than 47 people who sat on the butts all day and did nothing they might have had more survivors. Lastly they brought NO women. This could have been why so many people died. They didn't think at all of who to bring to the new
