Poe creates a dark mood on his short story “Black Cat”. Poe uses a cold hearted tone when he talks about killing the cat and his wife. It is cold hearted because he does not hesitate once while writing such cruel things. Poes uses a cold hearted tone in his writing when he has the narrator say “I made up my mind to take the life of the old man”(76), in this phrase the narrator tells us how he is determined to take an innocent man 's life who had done absolutely nothing to him just because he wanted to and he believed it was the right thing to do. Poe also sets a dark mood when in the first person, he has the narrator say “I admit the deed”(78) , he admits that he has done such a horrible deed but he still calls the heart he ripped out “hideous”. He has no shame whatsoever and he does not feel guilty for the crime he had committed. Instead he is proud of his actions and does not regret, which sets a dark mood because it shows how morbid his intentions
