Comparing the mean values of the raw data from before and after music type A and B, on both occasions heartrate increased after the exposure to each stimulus. However, Figure 2 indicates a 1.6 difference in beats per minute, whereas Figure 1 shows only a 0.5 difference in heartrate. This suggests that participants had a higher arousal level after listening to high energy music supporting the hypothesis. In both trials however, heart rate increase is minor, establishing a marginal effect on the relationship between music type and physical arousal. While the hypothesis is supported to an extent, this experiment lacks the reliability and the imperical evidence to support whether music preference relates to an increased physcial arousal. Physical arousal levels were measured by calculating the rate at which ones heart beats before and after exposure to the two music genres. While the measure of heartrate itself is objective quantitative data, participants measured their own pulse and recorded the beats per minuete through the wrist or neck. Although we assume the measurement is correct, this method may have caused error within the investigation, as the is lacks the precision of for example, a heart rate monitor. …show more content…
The population of interest wa teenagers aged 17-18 in South Australia according to their music preference, then a sample of twenty-two participants were randomly selected upon their music preference and immediately assigned an identifcation number to avoid bias. This would have not been representative of the population due to the relatively small size.
