In both the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass and Beloved by Toni Morrison, the abuse of power by slave masters and their tendencies to turn into monstrous human beings is depicted. In the Narrative, the true story of an actual past slave, Frederick Douglass recounts his factual experience with brutal slave owners. This historical truth is also portrayed in Beloved by protagonist Sethe. While the author was not writing from personal experience as a slave, she rendered the experience artistically in Beloved through the eyes and life of Sethe. While both stories showcase different perspectives, they are each able to depict powers ability to corrupt its wielder, at this time being the enslavers.…

One of the biggest things that came into play when determining the purity of a girl were her sexual relationships and if she was a promiscuous woman or not. In Much Ado about Nothing and Pride and Prejudice, we see that the promiscuity of male characters is treated differently and is seen as socially acceptable. The objective of this book is to provide an alternative insight into the actions that Abraham Lincoln propagated in his supposed fight for a slave free United States. According to the book, there was a hidden agenda in Lincoln’s adamant fight against slavery (DiLorenzo p. 2). The author gives the notion that the Civil War was not necessary and as such, all six-hundred thousand (600,000) plus lives that were lost on the battlefield could have been entirely avoided. This reasoning, derives from the belief that there were many other colonies throughout the states that ceased slavery without an act of violence. British Colonies and French States reached agreements to end slavery peacefully, and further recognized blacks as citizens of their respective…

Both Twelve Years a Slave and Lincoln helped shed light on the conditions, attitudes and beliefs surrounding slavery in mid-1800’s America. What was unique about both movies; however, was the way the directors choose to portray how slavery was interpreted through their respective points in American history, and the unique perspectives from which slavery was looked upon. While obviously the most noticeable difference is seen through the choosing of the main protagonist and the time period, Salmon Northrup an African American in the early 1840’s whose journey takes place over a 12 year period in 12 Years a Slave, and President Abraham Lincoln from January through April 1865 in Lincoln, the truly substantial differences arise from the political…
