The Union had a lot of advantages against the Confederacy and this was way the Union won because the Union thought long and hard about their attacks while the South took it as bait. Confederacy won the first battles repeatedly; they couldn't have gone on because of the fact that the Union had a greater population. This could've made Washington, DC completely surrounded by the Confederacy (Maryland and Virginia) and Lincoln would've either surrendered or he would have moved north and proclaimed New York or Philadelphia or even Boston as his capital. Kentucky and Missouri were very vital for either side in order to win the war. With these two states in the Union's hands, it was clear that the Union was having the upper hand. The border states were joining the Confederacy; the European powers would've been far more encouraged to recognize the Confederate States of America.
