Hozhoni Days Powwow
Hozhoni Days Powwow actually means "Days of Beauty." This Navajo name is Its Navajo name has superbly became the older name running up against the Hozhoni Days. The Hozhoni Days are a month long of pageantry, guest speakers, powwowing/dancing, and the celebrating of all of the different cultures that attend our beautiful Fort Lewis campus. Here at Fort Lewis, we also have the greatest tradition that is student lead/driven. The Hozhoni Days Powwow recognizes what others argue that is Fort Lewis’s most cherishable tradition, the Native American Education which is a privilege.

The said to be “Father of the Hozhoni Days” is Clyde Benally. At the time Clyde was attending Fort Lewis, the Deans of the Administrations politely asked hmi to help make the clubs on campus more exciting, so he said yes! The first organization to actually create themselves and follow through were called the Shalako Indian Club, which in today’s society is now called the Wanbli Ota (the organization that the Pageant Queen will be apart of when she wins). This Wanbli Ota Club created the campus-wide commemoration and was then name changed to the phenomenon that is now called the Hozhoni Days Powwow. The buffalo dance as said by my friend who attended with me is similar to the Sun Dance. This buffalo dance is more of a dance that is in correspondence to curing the ill people, and within that calling in the spirit and energy of the buffalo. The jingle dress dance was probably my favorite dance out of all of the dances. The Jingle regalia is worn that compromises with various lines of what looks like metal cons that make a jingle bell noise while dancing, performing, or even walking. The men’s fancy dance was a little different compared to the other types of dances that went on. The men’s fancy is is very complicated but fun to watch. This dance is made up of bright colors and high liveliness. This dance looks tough and looks like it requires some strength conditioning and training to be performed and be able to perform it for as long as this contestant did. This dance was performed what looked like a younger boy and, and was played with a hard bang of the drum but in fast and small beats. The dance sped up after a while and it looked like he was really enjoying himself. He even continued and did the splits in the
