As reported by Mary Johnston we know the first road built was Via Appia in 312 BCE after Rome’s first major procurement of territory in Italy. The roads were built as Rome’s boarders grew, eventually there was a giant network of nearly fifty thousand miles of road all leading back to Rome. In Britain there was a system of roads that connected towns in the interior with each other and to towns on the coast. All the main roads lead back to Londinium, thus linking gall towns to the main trading town on Britannia. The roads even lead over the channel across Gaul and eventually leading back to Rome. The roads were made as straight as possible with little roads branching off leading to other destinations. They ran through any geological inconvenience that could get in the way-hills cut through, gorges and rivers crossed with bridges, etc. Milestone would mark the distance from the start of the road and offer to important or common destinations, as well as a counselor or emperor whose attention the road was built under. The streets were wide enough for wagons to pass each other on either side and still have room for pedestrians to walk on either side of the road. These made trade and travel throughout Rome relatively easy and these roads helped create the roads that we use for our cars and bikes
