Consultants can play a major role in the decision-making process within an organization. Consulting activities are available in just about every facet of organizations and depend heavily on the area of expertise that is required to solve the problem at hand. With this fact in mind, it is important that the consultant does not blindly provide advice for problems that are outside of their areas of expertise doing so could hurt your reputation and the organization that you are trying to help. In performing these activities, the consultant needs to be willing to admit when they need help from other consultants to solve the problem at hand. Through the course of projects or daily operation, it is necessary to be able to write reports and conduct briefings for management and other co-workers to inform them of project progress. It is also important that they possess good listening skills to be able to provide sound solutions to problems that they have been asked to solve. A good consultant needs to be sure that they not only, hear what the customer is saying but also understands what the customer wants. This will require them to ask questions during the initial meeting to make sure that they understand and get feedback from the customer. They must remember that throughout the project they are working on, that they are part of the organization. This requires them to be able to work as a team with the other people working on the project and leave their own egos out of the process.
