[5 points] While IP addresses are tied to specific networks. Ethernet addresses are not. Can you think of a good reason why they are not?
The IP addresses are designed to be available from anywhere over internet and Ethernet addresses are limited to use within specific network.
Routing is used by IP i.e. specific addresses like 05.77.*.* or 767.295.*.* are used by IP for routing towards specific networks who owns these addresses. Using the BGP, these routes are distributed over an internet. This functions because all computers with in network has a same prefix of IP.
However Ethernet addresses are generates randomly at creation and has nothing in common with each other’s. Hence Ethernet switches learn every single address they view on internet.
Most networks are designed small so that Ethernet switches can keep track of all computers in network, however if same has to be done for entire internet, it may requires huge hardware support. Hence Ethernet addresses are tired up to same network where computer is used.
