The Icarus Myth Analysis

The Icarus myth is a Greek mythological story about a father and son who tried to escape imprisonment by flying away with fake wings. The father, Daedalus, was “an Athenian craftsman, famous for his ability to invent and build things” (Shmoop Editorial Team). The beginning of the myth gives a backstory about how Daedalus got kicked out of the Athens, traveled to Crete, and ultimately ended up locked away in a tower with his only son Icarus. Towards the end of the story, Daedalus crafted two large pairs of wings out of feathers and candle wax. As he was placing the wings on his son, he gave Icarus some warnings: “flying too near the ocean would dampen the wings and make them too heavy to use. Flying too near the sun, the heat would melt the …show more content…
For instance, in Musee des beaux arts, Auden creates a meaning for the painting by stating “…how everything turns away/ quite leisurely, from disaster.” The meaning he gives the painting is that when something bad happens you look the other way. He gives an example of an observation from the painting that supports his meaning when he says “…the ploughman may/ have heard the splash, the forsaken cry, / but for him it was not an important failure.” (Auden). Auden noticed that in the painting there is a man near the sea who might or might not have heard the splash and Icarus drowning, but decided to not pay attention. His whole idea of the painting is that you turn a blind eye when there is a problem. In Landscape with the fall of Icarus, Williams gives meaning to the painting by providing more details of the painting itself. He states, “when Icarus fell/ it was spring/ a farmer was ploughing/ his field” (Williams). He gives specific details about the time of season and what a character is doing in the painting. He also gives a similar meaning to Auden’s poem when states “a splash quiet unnoticed/ this was/ Icarus drowning” (Williams). The two poems have a similar observation. They notice that everyone else in the painting is avoiding or not seeing Icarus drowning. The overall meaning given to Bruegel’s painting is avoiding problems or disasters. The two poems are different in that Auden only talks about Bruegel’s painting towards the end and is long, and Williams is specific about the painting and is

For example, Maya Lin, designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, presents it in every facet of her design. (Source G) Her intentions are not lost upon the monument’s visitors, just as our poring over every feature won’t be lost upon our monument’s visitors. However, we mustn’t be so ambitious in our designs either.…

John L. Severance Fund (Fund, n.d)wrote a brief description of the artwork. Briefly, he said that the central figure in the painting was a strangely looking figure where the mouth is covered up by clustered ants and the bulging eyes are sealed, which represent the frustration of being in a dream where the senses are not operating. There are several people involved in this painting, excluding the strange figure. At the very left of the painting, a man with a bleeding face and amputated foot is spotted. This man could be a reference to the Myth of Oedipus, who killed his own father and had sexual relationship with his mother.…

Continually Alone, Ever Seeking In poetry there are many literary devices and aspects of figurative language that influence different themes and how readers are able to interpret the meaning behind a specific poet’s literary work. Through these devices one may correctly interpret and understand the thoughts a writer is trying to convey by his or her words written on paper or listened to by a reader. One facet of figurative language that can be used to construct and identify a theme in a poem is the use of analogy. In Walt Whitman’s poem “A Noiseless Patient Spider” the analogy of the spider compared to the soul is the main type of figurative language used to develop structure, the theme of isolation, as well as the theme of wanting to make connections because of that isolation throughout Whitman’s lyrical work.…

Poetry is a very beautiful and unique form of literature, but it often is given a bad reputation. The main reason being is people overanalyze it, instead of taking in the beauty of it. Billy Collins’s poem “Introduction of Poetry” explains how people overanalyze and take away from the beauty of a poem. The speaker suggests ways of reading poetry that allow the reader to understand the poem, but not take away from the beauty of it. Billy Collins quotes “I ask them to take a poem / and hold it up to the light / like a color slide” (lines 1-3) meaning take the poem that is being read and analyze it, but do not analyze it to the point you loose sight of the beauty or “colors”.…

Bruegel illustrates the emotion of apathy through his painting of the ships, farmer, shepherd, and fisherman. In the painting, none of the people stop their daily work to help Icarus, who is drowning. This is also portrayed in the poem with the quote, “...and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.” The quote shows how even the ships which were nearby saw Icarus falling out of the sky, they did not make any effort to help out. Instead, the ships just continued to sail as if nothing had happened.…
