It is a major misconception by most Americans to believe that illegal immigrants do not pay their fair share of taxes. The reality is that according to the institute on taxation and economic policy, “immigrants paid $11.8 billion in state and local taxes in 2012, even while living illegally” (Gardner 1). Many illegal immigrants use stolen or forged social security cards in order to acquire a job, this leads to them paying into taxes for services they will likely never utilize. President Barak Obama has found that immigrants can be a major asset to promoting growth within the U.S. economy. Obama has been pushing a bill called the Immigration Accountability Executive Action act which would allow illegal immigrants to work legally within the united states, this would also enable taxes to be collected from once nonpaying illegal immigrant’s paychecks. This bill would “boost economic output by an estimated 0.4 to 0.9 percent over ten years, corresponding to increases in gross domestic product of $90 billion to $210 billion in 2024” (whitehouse.gov) With this information we can see that granting immigrants legal status within the United States would not only benefit the illegal immigrants but the nation as a whole. Allowing these illegal immigrants legal status would allow far more money to be collected through taxes which will benefit the American nation
