Immigrant: A Short Story

Just Survive Somehow I never really planned to say goodbye to my family. The old Arian wouldn't have cared about what my family thought of me. I was too busy roaming the streets trying to find more money than I had as a kid. I guess nothing much has changed since then. In my opinion, everything happened too swiftly before I knew it, I got used to bargain for clothes, food, etc. One thing that I was not prepared for was the tantalizing that I would get from the people around me. No, not just, that but how otherworldly homeless people can be compared to normal people. It’s as if we have our own economy, solely based on the dependency on others. I should’ve saw it coming, I always was stirring up trouble and made mistake by mistake until my parents couldn't take it anymore. Everything about my old village, the cobbled roads that made creaks to assure you that someone had just crossed the road. Additionally, the scents from just going outside in the backyard was so different from the musty smell in the streets. As his facial expressions changed with every moment that passed, I noticed how his eyebrows tightened just like mine did when I got inspired, or how his frown lines matched my late uncle’s before he passed. It’s as if he was reading my mind and all of a sudden two pieces of the puzzle finally started to click together. He hesitated to speak, trying to find the right words. “A-Arian, is that you”, he stuttered. I felt the connection that I failed to feel for all these years. I didn’t need to retort any sign of astonishment as the back of my head was spinning and flashing showing me signs of my future. My future. I could see a future with my cousin. I could compare the memories of my past years with the present, and now the future. Before I knew I was embraced in the tightest hug, so tight it’s like all of my problems just hit me in the face. Except this time I couldn’t foresee any problems, and I knew that any challenge I would end up facing I didn’t have to face alone. We ended up conversing for hours when my cousin had to finally excuse himself for the night. I asked if I could join him but was scared if he was going to leave me forever, probably for a family of his

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years.
