Throughout the course of this year my writing skills have grown and improved my ability as a writer. At the start of the year, my writing contained overall poor use of writing skills and strategies. Weak intensifiers along with personal pronouns became frequent in my writing. Towards the end of the year, I began to use more formal diction and better writing strategies. In our first argument timed write of the year, I got a score of two. By the end of the year, I started scoring fives and sixes. On the timed write I scored lowest on, we had a prompt in which we had to pick whether or not tv and social media had an effect on the viewer's opinions and democratic values. In my essay I constantly used weak intensifiers such as “very” and “really”. My thesis statement stated, “The opinions of others that are heard and seen on social media and other platforms have a very big impact on the opinions of the people watching.” I could have stated this weak thesis statement more formally. My vocabulary and use of diction has widened, which are valuable skills that I will take on and use in everyday life. When applying for jobs it is important to have such skills to come across as mature and professional in a business setting. The practice of doing timed writes can be helpful in developing creative thinking and allowing your mind to think quickly yet effectively. Useful in many career situations, this will help the mind to think briskly under stressful circumstances. One of the most important things that I have gained from this writing course is the ability to communicate and have my work read and reviewed by others. The ability to implement constructive criticism and apply it to your writing is required in a work setting. Writing is one of those skills that I will use in my everyday life, so it is important to develop good habits

I have learned how to use neutral language, write complete thesis statements, how to put my own tone and voice in my writing, and how to critique my own paper. How to use neutral language was the most difficult skill to learn over the semester. “Standardized tests can be viewed by teachers, students, and parents, as helpful for the school system or detrimental to one’s academic future”. This opening sentence from my Informational Argumentative Essay is a perfect illustration of how my neutral language showed both sides of the argument but did not actually take a side. “Spiro Theodore Agnew used logos, pathos, and ethos to successfully get his point across to the millions of Americans listening to him that the news is giving out twisted information”.…

I feel that writing is a good subject to be familiar and practicing in frequently, it is a necessary tool to communicate properly. Although, if I were to be truthful I’d have to say that I am not the biggest fan of it due to the fact that it bores me and I have trouble figuring out what to say. So I find it hard to enjoy writing because most of the time I am just struggling to concentrate because I don’t have much more to say about a topic. Recently, since I have not been in school for a while, I have found myself forgetting rules to the English language in my everyday speech so I find it to be useful. This has influenced how I feel about writing because the more I write, the more easily I can remember to use these rules in my daily…

Keep Writing Simple: Until recently, I was sure academic writing needed to be complex.
