This essay is relating to the participation of swimming within the school community. Section 1 of this essay will analyse the first two levels of Figueroa’s framework in depth and relate it to my participation in the sport of swimming. Section 2 of this essay will consider the equity and access issues, and the barriers that may be present within Forest Lake State High School students. The final part of the essay will recommend strategies to improve the involvement of swimming within the school.
BACKGROUND:
Forest Lake State High School (FLSHS) is situated in Brisbane’s South West bordering on the municipality of Ipswich. Forest Lake State High School provides educational programs and services for over 1400 students in years 7-12 in a co-educational environment. The school comprises a junior secondary school (years 7, 8 and 9) and a senior school (years 10, 11 and 12). The influences of others has not effected me, my confidence and my ability to get in the pool. I am supported by those around me this is including my friends, family, teachers and coaches. I am not largely impacted by the first two levels of Figueroa’s framework as I am able to participate and enjoy myself while in the pool.
SECTION 2.1:
Access and equity can be an issue that may hinder the participation of students swimming at Forest Lake State High School (FLSHS). Access is the student’s opportunity to be involved in the sport of their choice. Equity is whether the facilities and resources are fairly distributed between every member of society. Many students of FLSHS may not be able to participate in the sport of their choice due to the circumstances they are in relating to equity and access.
