I plan to become a medical researcher and hopefully find cures for diseases that plague mankind. Spelman will assist me with this long term goal through internships, and also through their strong alumnae. I am aware that a small percentage of people who hold an occupation within the scientific field are women, and an even smaller percentage of these women are black. This not only means that I must be efficient in my field of study, but also twice as efficient as others to be successful. Although this barrier exists within the scientific world, I aim to promote diversity by bringing to light issues that are often unrepresented in scientific communities. Ruth Hubbard stated in “Fact Making and Feminism”, “Until the 1960s, youngsters mainly from the upper-middle and upper classes, most of them male and white, had access to that kind of education. Since, then more white women and people of color (both women and men) have been able to gain access, but the class origins of scientists have not changed appreciably.” This implies that there’s a lot of work that needs to be done with science-related careers, in terms of making these jobs more accessible to all
