The sacred union between Inanna and Dumuzi serves to bring prosperity to the land and its Sumerian people. This union is assembled according to the preferences of Inanna’s brother Utu. Utu chooses the shepherd Dumuzi to take Inanna to the holy bed. Dumuzi is chosen for his many assets, but mainly because he is well endowed and capable of being a leader of the kingdom. Dumuzi is also compared to the farmer, who is depicted as less of a man than Dumuzi, and therefore less endowed to please the queen Inanna.
