The transition between High School and University writing can be challenging to the ill-prepared student. In high school we might have gotten great feedback from teachers about our work: “great job”, “very good” etc, but in college our professors might comment differently most likely because they are searching for something different in college writing. Most often because professors expect a different style of writing than that of a high school class, such as a more developed opinion on the subject rather than a summary of what you researched. In high school we we’re taught to research, summarize, and respond to a subject, but in college we go into greater depth of our research and responses. But, in college, we no longer only write about what “they say”, but what “we say” as well. Our writing must be almost like a part of a bigger conversation, almost universal in a way. By joining into a larger conversation we become critical thinkers, thinking beyond, “they said this therefore it is that”, we learn to question the credibility and authenticity of other writer’s work. Many times students, including I, have failed to state their point. When asked in high school what the main point of your essay was you read your thesis statement, “Firearm legislation is limiting the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms.” The first thing asked after you state your “thesis” is, “why”? Why is firearm legislation limiting the rights of law-abiding citizens? It is important to know what your are trying to find/answer in your writing before you write your paper. Otherwise, we are only stating the topic or intention for writing your paper not the main point itself. College and High School thesis differ in the aspect that they stand for two different things.
