The first of these theories is the James Lange Theory. The basic idea of the James Lange Theory is that once an event is processed in our minds, then we feel an emotion that correlates with the event to allow our mind to reason (Myers 464). An example of this theory in the movie Inside Out is when Riley is sitting down having dinner with her family in their new house in California and she has already lost Joy, her driving emotion in life. When she is asked a question by her mother that she would have normally wanted to talk about she sits there quietly for a second processing the question (the arousal). Because Joy is no longer in her head, disgust tries to respond to the question as joy would but comes off very rude and abrasive (the expressive behavior). After this happens Riley becomes very angry with her mother and father and is sent to her room. When she is sent to her room, she is very mentally divided (conscious experience) because all her remaining emotions are split about what they should have done and what they should do. This would be a perfect example of the James Lange theory because it shows the pause to process the arousal before an emotion is felt. The second theory of emotion is the Cannon Bard Theory of Emotion. This theory states that we experience the arousal and feel the emotion simultaneously (Myers 464). An example of this from the movie is when Riley …show more content…
The congruence of current mood with the mood at the time of memory storage helps to recall the memory. Thus, the likelihood of remembering an event is higher when encoding and recall moods match up (Ambohn). When Riley was very happy in the movie she was easily able to recall all the good times she had with her mom and dad like when she first moved into the new house and she started playing hockey. When she was with her mom and dad in the living room she could easily recall the good memories like when she scored her first goal back in Minnesota (Docter). A personal example for me is when I’m happy I can easily remember all the good times I had in high school playing football with my friends and winning a lot of games. I have a hard time remembering the bad times and the few games we lost. A dependent memory system is context dependent memories which is when you try to go back to a specific setting or place to remember or just being in a certain place makes you remember things. An example of this in the movie is when sadness in trying to get her and Joy through the maze but has to be in the maze of long term memory to remember how to get through it (Docter). A real life example for me that I relate very strongly to is when I lose my keys and have to retrace my steps through my house to find them. Memory and emotions share a very strong correlation. People can often remember very emotionally charged situations
