Common knowledge has helped me understand the world does not revolve around me. I have also come to understand I have a specific role in my family, which is being a daughter, granddaughter, and cousin. I have also come to understand that I am a unique individual, and should not compare myself to others within the context of this multigenerational family. We all have our strengths and differences. We should not try and pretend to be something we are not because it could throw the whole family off balance. Both sides of my family have their fair share of problems. Despite all the problems my extended family has, many family members still love and care about each other. Deep down they care about one another and have a desire to salvage their relationships with certain family members. Deep down they want to know more about what is going in their families’ lives. Deep down they also respect each other. The main lesson I have learned is there is no such thing as a perfect family. As a Christian, I have also learned I need to love and show grace towards my extended family, even though we do not have the same values or lifestyle. I had a difficult time with this assignment, because I did not know much about either side of the family. After completing this assignment, my goal is to rebuild the relationships I once had with my aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as my step-grandmother.
