Mainstream society teaches people that one must graduate high school, get a college education and get a high-paying job in order to be deemed successful. He could have done what was expected of him, but He could not identify with living a life like that. Living in a society like that was all just an imitation of real happiness. This revelation led him to donate his saving to charity, abandon his car in the desert and burn his money. Chris wanted to give up his life as a functioning citizen in his community. He felt that he was wasting his time instead of living to his fullest potential. Chris did what made him happy and that is not a quality possessed by someone who is incompetent. He went into the wild to learn what it would be like to live in the wild on your own. He wanted to get away from society and find the true meaning of life outside the city walls.
