I was born and raised in an “urban village” in China, literally village in big city, that developed slower, compared to neighboring areas. I grew up witnessing the transformation of a fast developing city. As I saw the area being surround by high-rise buildings, I started to wonder what made the speed of development vary so much between areas. It did not take long to figure out that transportation was one of the most significant obstacles that hinder the growth of the urban village. In a place where vehicles had to share the lanes with pedestrians, everything became less accessible. Once I realized this, I started to develop an interest in transportation engineering.

My undergraduate education at Iowa State University provided me with basic insight and knowledge about general Civil Engineering. Out of all of the specializations in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering has interested me the most. I would like to further develop my knowledge of transportation engineering, specifically traffic safety and efficiency, by pursuing a Master’s Degree at Iowa State University. …show more content…
Dong Jing. Throughout Independent Study, I conducted literature review, analyzed charging data of electric vehicles, presented findings to colleagues, and produced a report. One key skill that I gained was the ability to analyze data in different aspects and forms. It enabled me to understand the research topic more thoroughly and help audience to understand more easily when presenting my study results to them.
