Irony In 'The Ransom Of The Red Chief'

Decent Essays
In “The Ransom of the red chief” O’Henry uses irony to create a humorous tone. the story is full of twist and turns you would not expect. bill and Sam are looking to kid to kidnap for a ransom when they find a boy bill asks the boy if he wants a “bag of candy and a nice ride?” the boy response is to hit bill in the eye with a brick. This creates humor because you don’t expect a kid to react that way when someone is trying to kidnap him. When bill and Sam saw the town named Summit, they were not expecting it to be as “flat as a flannel-cake.” bill had the idea of kidnapping the kid and getting the money from the kid’s father but we learn that Mr. Dorset, made a counter-offer asking for them to pay “two hundred and fifty dollars in cash”

Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, a war novel overflowing with confusion, lust, and guilt, captures its readers and throws them into the chaotic journey of Yossarian, a witty and smart aleck soldier, trying to escape war. While Heller hides his theme with the use of satire, the ride through his character’s lives during the war, lead his readers exactly to his main point. As Catch-22 marches its way through a vivid story of flashbacks and present obstacles the men face, Heller tips his reader to the theme with the use of loose ends, irony, and exaggeration. In Catch-22, Joseph Heller uses loose ends so his theme is not directly stated in the satire.…

In the short stories, “Under the I," “Penny in the dust," and “After the sirens," irony is used to express meaning. To begin with, in the first short story “Under the I” situational irony is used to contribute to the theme that in order to prosper in life, one must have a positive attitude and have the will to take chances in life in order to fulfill their potential. This idea is clearly demonstrated in the context by how Mrs. McNaughton taught Harold to be optimistic and stand up for himself rather than letting people rule his life for him after he discovered her secret “… Mrs. McNaughton couldn't be there. You see she did pass away —of a heart attack —there, last week after the bingo…” (Alford, 16). Further more, in the short story “Penny…

GUYS, MUTANT FLEAS ARE TERRORIZING THE MIDWEST! Well, not really. Dave Barry's story about mutant fleas is basically a fake news article, that is very unrealistic, making fun of the way that news reporters blow things out of proportion, and tell a story, rather than what actually happened. There are not actually mutant fleas and giant flying cats, and berry hints at this in the story. Dave Barry's short story called “mutant fleas terrorize midwest”, there were lots of examples of high humor, more than low humor.…

Another minute form of irony was when Anna said she wanted flowers from Harold and he brought her sacks of flour which the audience did not expect at all. In fact most would find it coy in some way. Irony emphasizes ideas and points shared throughout the story and like symbolism, adds complexity to the story as a whole. Stranger than Fiction teaches the audience that irony helps engage the audience into a story…

In “Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing,” the definition for irony states, “In language, a discrepancy between what is said and what is meant. In life, a discrepancy between what is expected, and what occurs” (715). In Sharon Olds poem “Rite of Passage,” a mother observes her son and the rest of the children, at her son’s birthday party (703). The mother describes the boys as if they are men from the lines “Hands in pockets, they stand around jostling, jockeying for place” (5-6). In the lines “like Generals, they relax and get down to playing war, celebrating my son`s life,” it is ironic because the mother is picturing the boys as if it were a real war, and they were all grownups (25- 26).…

Irony is used in the stories “Sorry, Right Number” by Stephen King and “Back There” by Rod Serling. Verbal irony uses sarcasm to hide how the character actually feels, while situational irony is what is the opposite of what is expected from that situation. Irony is needed in both of these stories because it builds suspense, makes the desire of the reader to keep reading, and making the overall story more enjoyable. In King’s “Sorry, Right Number”, he uses verbal irony through the stage directions in Act 1 where Connie asks Dennis “Do you think Aunt Dawn’s…

soldiers get scared in The Red Badge of Courage, but learning that others are scared to fight brings Henry a new found drive in fighting: hate. He hates the enemy, he wants to fight, and Henry aims to win. Courage can always be found in the strangest for these soldiers whether in letters or a photo because this is the reality that drives them to return home. Courage is not always an easy thing to come by, especially in war, and Crane does an amazing job depicting this in the realest sense possible. However, having fear is different than not having courage and Crane throws this throughout The Red Badge of Courage.…

One instance of irony comes from the two mothers, while Julian’s mother is racist and shows prejudice toward African-Americans, she still shows her kind-hearted nature toward the good people of the race, like her nurse, and Carver, the little boy. Julian’s mother decides she will give a penny to the boy, despite being tight on money. The ironic element reveals itself: instead of embracing the kindness, Carver’s mother “explode[s] like a piece of machinery that had been given one ounce of pressure too much”, simple-mindedly believing Julian’s mother is being condescending, as Julian suspected the woman would (O’Connor 668). The woman struck Julian’s mother, and the blow ultimately causes her death. Tragically and ironically, she died over an act of kindness.…
