Trying to find the answer to the title question found in the summary, “Is College the Best Option? chapter 16, They Say / I Say written by Cathy Birkenstein and Russell Durst, is one that has many different answers. Answers that vary, from each essay author found in chapter 16.
It seems that there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on the individual, go to college or not. We are told in junior high or in high school that we should go to college. But is it for everyone? One thing that is for sure about what the answer is or should be; college is the best option. Graff recognizes these people and writes about them in his essay, Hidden Intellectualism (Graff 264-75), intellectuals who have learned their skill through years of hard work in their profession(s). Graff considered himself to be one of this people. He talks about how the only thing that interested him were things about sports. He goes on to say that it’s not because a college education is not important for people who are street wise. But is being street wise enough? “Hidden intellectuals should be counseled, encouraged, in that they have the potential of achieving much more, if they are taught to look at their abilities in an academic point of view”.
